The deep work advice everyone worships only works if you have one job. Most of us have ten.

Think Big Minute #59

I do a lot of things at once because a lot of things demand my attention, and there isn't enough time to take one thing from beginning to end and still get everything else done.

I also have times when I go deep on one thing and focus on nothing else until it's finished.

That's when it's something super important that has to be exactly right, has a deadline, and matters enough that everything else can wait.

I have a system for both.

For running a lot at once, the trick is that I'm not actually splitting my attention. I'm just never letting a process sit idle waiting on me.

I find the things I can start, let run on their own, and come back to.

I kick off the one that takes the longest to run by itself first. Start a video rendering, for example. Then I go down the list in descending order, longest to shortest.

When I hit the bottom of the list, I go back to the top and keep cycling through until everything is done.

So I've always got several things cooking at once, and none of them are sitting there waiting on me to get to them. The work happens in parallel instead of one piece at a time.

To a deep work purist, from the outside it probably looks like chaos.

It's really a tightly woven symphony of productivity.

I have a system for deep work too.

I put on noise cancelling headphones.

I close all the doors.

I turn off every app and device that might make a sound or a light.

I hide anything interesting to me.

I block all social media.

And I leave myself nothing but me and the thing that has to get done.

I believe the kids call that "locking in."

In a perfect world we'd only ever have to do one thing from beginning to end.

But most of us don't work on an assembly line with a single job. Most of us, especially entrepreneurs, wear a lot of hats and have a lot of ideas we want to turn into reality. So unless you want a pile of half finished crap, you need a system to move many things forward at once.

AI agents make the run-on-their-own category bigger than it's ever been. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Lovable, and Lara on Legiit all let me start something, walk away, and come back to real progress. It's like having more hands. But the system underneath is the same one I've always used.

And then there are the things that are too important to run in the background. The ones only you can do, that have to be done right. That's when you close every door, kill every distraction, and hammer the one thing until it's finished.

Those are my two systems. Try them and see if they work for you.
